I found myself enjoying this film more than I expected. I'm not keen on the music featuring the Chipmunks and Chipettes—it’s a bit too high-pitched for my taste—but I grew up watching the cartoon series, and yes, I do like the live-action movies because all six characters plus Dave have personalities that are easy to root for. That holds true here as well. If you're familiar with the 1983 show, this movie feels very much in line with it, featuring the characters involved in a fairly serious story involving criminals, smuggling, and kidnapping. The plot isn’t particularly remarkable, and it certainly starts off unrealistically, but if you want to see the girls and boys on an adventure—which is essentially what they're always about—it's definitely entertaining! I was pleasantly surprised by the backgrounds. Like many larger animated films that had a theatrical release back then, the scenery looks really beautiful and detailed. There are several statues in Greece, intricate trees and other plants in the jungle; the movie truly uses the "travel around the world" concept to display some wonderfully painted locations! Furthermore, the characters—particularly the Chipettes—are shown wearing various outfits of different styles, which I always appreciate when cartoons do that. Because of the serious villains, parts of the film even felt like a slightly more lighthearted and less emotionally intense version of "The Rescuers," and the range of musical moods is also nice. I mean, there’s a dance scene with snakes! So, yeah, if you liked the 1983 show, the Chipmunks and Chipettes in general, or just a cute, mostly child-friendly adventure, you might enjoy this one. I certainly did. A word of caution: as other reviews have mentioned, this movie does contain several racial stereotypes, such as dangerous Arabs and indigenous people depicted through human sacrifice. Aside from that, it's a fun and cute film. As always, Simon and Jeanette were my favorites! 😊
