A clever reimagining of the film from 1958. This telling of a story about an alien being without distinct characteristics—not the typical "little green men"—paves the way for a unique kind of invasion film. The filmmakers have largely maintained faithfulness to the earlier version, and the progress in special effects over three decades enables some genuinely impressive and gruesome deaths. A standout moment is when someone disappears down a sink drain, as is another attack on one of the main characters that takes place within a doctor’s office. However, certain visual elements don't quite hold up, and you might find yourself laughing at them. The performances are exceptionally strong, and there are definitely some scenes that genuinely elicit fear. It feels like any of the people in the story, even those who seem central to it, could be eliminated at any point. I would recommend this as essential viewing for anyone familiar with the original film.
