I almost didn’t write anything about last night's movie because it was just that bad... but I guess I’ll spend some time talking about it anyway. The plot revolves around Mark Wahlberg, who is trying desperately to be liked and ends up in serious debt while juggling a mistress and a fiancée—both of whom treat him poorly. To dig himself out of this financial hole, he teams up with his group of friends, the "Funky Bunch," to kidnap what they believe is just some random person; however, it turns out she’s the daughter of a broke movie producer who has connections. So, not only is Wahlberg's character a pushover, but everyone involved in this scheme is incredibly foolish. The filmmakers really went too far trying to make these characters seem "cool" and "edgy," which resulted in some truly awkward and occasionally offensive moments. But wait—it’s executive produced by John Woo, so the action sequences must be amazing, right? Wrong. The gunfights often involve Wahlberg doing breakdancing moves (because he's supposedly "COOOOOL!"), and every shot seems to have excessive wire work attached. It could have been entertaining, and there were a few shots that were hilariously over-the-top, but the editing of the action scenes was just really clumsy. They’d jump from shots of Wahlberg spinning around while firing wildly to him flying through the air—sometimes in what appeared to be an entirely different room. People would get shot and then fly toward the shooter or sideways. I swear there were instances where people simply flew through the air or through glass for no apparent reason... just random people floating around. And don’t even get me started on the car chase—there were so many shots of cars crashing into things and sustaining obvious damage, only to be perfectly fine a moment later. Also, Mark Wahlberg's hair color changes randomly throughout the movie. It goes from reddish-brown to almost gray/blondish brown to dark brown. I initially thought it was a stunt double, but this happens even in scenes that aren’t action-packed. Maybe it was the product he used for different scenes or the lighting, but whatever the reason, it was odd. It doesn't get a final star because we did manage to have some laughs at how ridiculous everything was. Apparently, the movie made twice its budget (seriously!). It was also fun looking back and remembering how awful late 90s fashion was—and there’s plenty of it on display here. But honestly, you don't need to see this film; it truly is terrible. If you want something to laugh at, there are far better options out there.
