Reno on The Amazing Spider-Man 2

6/10 · Aug 31, 2014

The second film in the new Spider-Man series, directed by Marc Webb, has made me question his ability to lead these movies. I feel like someone else needs to take over before things get worse. Of all six Spider-Man films released so far, this one is easily the weakest. While it earned a significant amount of money worldwide – around $800 million – it didn't deliver the quality that fans were hoping for. The movie tried to juggle too many characters and storylines, which felt disjointed; their appearances seemed random and created confusion about what was happening. I had high hopes for this film, but they weren’t met. Honestly, I’ve lost some of my enthusiasm for Spider-Man. Perhaps it was too soon to reboot the franchise. The first movie provided a decent starting point for the new series, but this second installment proved disappointing. The length—nearly two and a half hours—started to feel excessive, giving me a bit of a headache. It was actually ten minutes shorter originally, but they added time back on to include an extended preview of the third film. When you have a powerful hero, you need a worthy adversary; if both are well-matched, their battles can be truly compelling. I didn’t feel that Electro lived up to expectations, at least not for me. His power seemed beyond Spider-Man's capabilities, but it wasn't presented effectively. Although Jamie Foxx wasn't bad in the role, the filmmakers wasted his presence with lackluster scenes. The original Spider-Man was groundbreaking—it pioneered the use of computer graphics in modern superhero movies, paving the way for films like 'Batman,' 'Iron Man,' and 'Thor.' I preferred the version starring Tobey Maguire, even though that trilogy’s quality declined with each film. This reboot had a promising beginning, but failed to maintain its momentum. The emotions felt forced and didn't resonate as well as they did in the original series. A strong box office performance doesn't automatically equate to a good movie, or a bad one for that matter. I was expecting more, particularly regarding the villains. Andrew Garfield wasn’t outstanding; much of his face was obscured by CGI. Emma Stone also underperformed and couldn't compare favorably to Kristen Dunst. Dane DeHaan’s character suffered from similar issues, and I don’t understand why more attention wasn’t given to characters in a film that ran 140 minutes. As I mentioned, the subplots really hurt the movie. The digital 3D and stunts were subpar. There are far more things to criticize than praise, but hopefully, the next installment will address these problems. If it improves—not just financially, but with a better story, visuals, and performances—then there won’t be an issue. Otherwise, I'd like to see a fourth film in the original series. It's not really worth seeing, though many people have already watched it or plan to.
