Brent Marchant on Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost

8/10 · Jan 13, 2026

The difficulties of balancing family and career can be immense for people in serious relationships. Those pressures intensify when partners also share a workplace, essentially keeping them together constantly and denying them any respite from their situation or each other. Adding the responsibilities of raising children to that mix creates another layer of complexity, potentially impacting the kids as much as the parents. It's definitely a risk whether those spouses and their families can navigate these challenges and not just survive but also flourish, though some couples do manage it successfully. That was true for the comedy and acting team of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, who were life partners, colleagues, and the parents of two successful children who followed them into show business. However, maintaining that balance wasn’t simple for Anne and Jerry, as this new documentary memoir reveals—an affectionate yet straightforward account from their son, writer-actor-director Ben Stiller. In many ways, the film also functions as a look at what it was like for the filmmaker and his older sister, Amy, growing up with famous parents. Stiller and Meara achieved widespread recognition thanks to frequent appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and successful engagements in nightclubs during the 1960s; they were deeply devoted but struggled to manage the demands of their relationship, home life, and careers. Despite their dedication to one another, their family, and their work, their path together also included conflicts, counseling, unfulfilled professional goals, and a considerable amount of alcohol consumption, among other hurdles. These experiences influenced their children during their upbringing, qualities that unknowingly carried over into adulthood when they became spouses and parents themselves. So, in some respects, this project served as much as a therapeutic experience for the filmmaker as it did a sincere tribute to a couple who never gave up on building a good life for themselves and their children, despite facing numerous trials. This deeply personal production offers an insightful view into their vibrant and diverse world and how it changed over time and across generations. “Stiller & Meara” is marked by unfiltered emotions, cherished family memories, a glimpse into the couple’s quirky habit of collecting things (reflected in the film's subtitle), and a collection of memorable archival clips from the extensive careers of this talented group of entertainers. Those who admire Jerry and Anne will appreciate this honest tribute, not only for showcasing their work but also for illustrating how they lived as both people and professionals. It required considerable effort to achieve all that, but ultimately, Jerry and Anne had much to be proud of—achievements from which we have all benefited.
