It seems like this movie should be awful—Nazis on a Scottish island using Rasputin's spirit to summon the devil? Yet somehow, it’s not. Their scheme is disrupted by brave commandos led by scientist “Broom” (John Hurt), who stops them and rescues whatever was emerging from the abyss. He then brings it back to his lab, where the half-horned creature fits right in with his collection of other beings housed in the officially secret "Bureau of Paranormal Research”. The problem is that “Broom” is aging and worried that without him, his charges will be taken over by the military, so he chooses the eager young “Myers” (Rupert Evans) to lead them. They must confront revitalized Nazis under a vengeful Russian mystic, who now wields "Sammael"—a being capable of regenerating like the Hydra, growing new bodies every time it’s destroyed—though thankfully not just heads. As tensions rise, it's up to “Hellboy” (Ron Perlman), his telepathic frog companion “Abe” (Doug Jones), and his previously unspoken love interest “Liz” (Selma Blair) to deal with the usual task of saving the world from evil. The special effects are effective, but director Guillermo del Toro also ensures there’s plenty of memorable dialogue and action to keep things moving for a couple of hours. Perlman seems genuinely pleased to be involved, and that enthusiasm is infectious as the film blends fantasy, magic, and some familiar biases; there's a touch of class from Hurt and Evans, all topped off by Roden's over-the-top performance channeling Christopher Lee. The pairing of Satan and the Swastika certainly sets a high bar for wickedness, and while I don’t expect any surprises at the end, there are plenty of twists and turns as things intensify, and no one is safe.
