The announcement of a contemporary update of St. Trinian’s didn't exactly generate excitement initially. The earlier films from the fifties and sixties weren’t exactly comedic masterpieces, though; they were generally pleasant for families and occasionally enjoyable, with decent casts, but never considered vital British comedies or immune to modern remakes and re-imaginings. The 2007 version of St. Trinian's isn't better than the originals, but it’s also not as awful as some critics claimed back then. It manages to stand on its own terms, being humorous, playful, and consistently entertaining. The film benefits from a talented comedic cast, including Rupert Everett (clearly enjoying himself in drag), Colin Firth, and Russell Brand, all thrown into the chaotic world led by Gemma Arterton and Tallulah Riley. The writers seemed careful about pushing boundaries with potentially suggestive content, but there are some very effective jokes, and the way the girls are divided into different groups—Emos, Chavs, etc.—is a clever writing touch that’s used well. It was successful and popular enough to justify a follow-up two years later… 6.5/10
