It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck, especially given the current season, but I’ve just experienced a movie based on a video game that isn't completely awful. Everything about "Sonic the Hedgehog" suggested it would be unwatchable, let alone enjoyable, and yet I was pleasantly surprised by this energetic, silly, and over-the-top film geared toward families. There’s plenty of enjoyment to be found here for both grown-ups and children. This live action adventure comedy draws from the popular SEGA game, telling the story of a fast, vibrant blue hedgehog named Sonic. It's usually a bad idea to make a movie about a character from a video game—at least 95% of the time—but this film manages to strike a good balance between an original, straightforward plot and some nicely placed references for fans. In the story, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) gets into several scrapes on Earth while teaming up with Tom (James Marsden), a small-town police officer. They must join forces to prevent the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic for his nefarious plans. The movie explores themes of friendship and feeling isolated, and the actors do a good job keeping things lighthearted. Marsden is wonderfully charming and goofy as an ordinary guy, and Schwartz delivers a performance full of heart through his voice acting that really carries the film. Above all else, Carrey shines, embracing the role with a wild energy that will bring back memories of why you always liked him. There are numerous action sequences and some crude humor (along with a few odd, exaggerated scenes that feel like commercials for Olive Garden), but it’s all entertaining enough to suggest "Sonic" would be good for a fun evening at the movies with your family.
