This film brought to mind “Rosemary’s Baby,” particularly its unsettling atmosphere, while also incorporating some of the more disturbing aspects found in “The Thing.” I wasn't entirely shocked to discover that the director acknowledged "Rosemary’s Baby" as a significant influence, along with “The Spiral Staircase," given how much it resembled that earlier film for the initial portion. The setting is simply relocated from an aging New York apartment building to sunny Southern California. Billy Warlock performs admirably in the lead role; it's disappointing he didn't achieve greater recognition as an actor. The first hour or so proved quite effective, but the disturbing developments of the final act felt drawn out and excessive. A subtler approach would have been preferable. Roman Polanski understood this principle when handling the climactic scene in “Rosemary’s Baby,” keeping it brief—just a minute or two. “Society” gained some traction in Europe during 1989 and 1990, but failed to connect with audiences in America, where it didn't receive an official release until 1992, although it did have showings at the USA Film Festival in 1991. It proved successful when distributed on video, and has since cultivated a dedicated following. The total runtime is 1 hour and 39 minutes. Filming took place around Los Angeles, specifically in Pasadena (the mansion), Van Nuys (high school), North Hills (hospital) and Culver City (studio work). GRADE: C
