Johnny Depp delivers what may very well be my favorite performance of his career. Drawing from Irving Washington’s captivatingly eerie story, he portrays the rational Constable "Ichabod Crane," sent by Christopher Lee – another familiar face in Tim Burton’s films – to look into a puzzling killing within the quiet Dutch community named in the title. Upon arrival, he finds that the locals, deeply entrenched in their beliefs, believe the killings are the work of the “Headless Horseman,” who has seemingly returned from beyond for retribution against those who wronged him during the American fight for independence. It becomes clear that there's a great deal of dark and unpleasant activity happening among the Van Tassels—featuring Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, and Christina Ricci—and their unsettling neighbors, all brought to life by strong acting from Richard Griffiths, Ian McDiarmid, and particularly, in a short appearance, Michael Gough. The narrative is skillfully constructed with multiple levels and proceeds at a brisk pace, effectively connecting the various elements and guiding us through a sequence of jealousy, deception, witchcraft, and avarice. The environment—a misty, shadowy woodland—creates an ideal backdrop for this film, which has a distinct atmosphere and can be quite frightening on occasion. I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable, and it remains worth seeing even after two decades have passed.
