There’s no denying the actors are talented and perform admirably. However, what emerges is essentially Tim asserting his unwillingness to engage with the source material—a recurring pattern. It mirrors his approach to Batman and every other adaptation he’s touched. I once knew a woman in college who professed an enthusiasm for numerous books, yet she only ever claimed to have read "The Mists of Avalon"—and she was studying art as well. Consequently, the project devolves into Tim Burton's self-proclaimed artistic reimagining of something he hasn’t actually experienced and therefore lacks the understanding to properly convey.
