It’s an enjoyable film that I could see myself watching again, and I would suggest others check it out. Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci certainly have significant roles, but there's a great deal more happening in the movie as well. The Headless Horseman is central to the narrative, much like in the source material. I didn’t find the original story about the Headless Horseman particularly substantial, so most adaptations seem acceptable; although an adaptation featuring the Easter Bunny might be going too far. The oddness here arises from a need to establish a peculiar mood, compounded by Depp's eccentric performance and the reactions of those around him—even though they believe in ghosts and he frequently argues with them about it. Ichabod Crane’s portrayal as an intelligent but timid lawman is compelling because he’s essentially given the role of hero. It functions more like a mystery than anything else, which was unexpected. The action sequences are typically intense but short-lived, and much of the runtime involves searching for logical explanations until Occam's razor prevails. While it’s a worthwhile film and a respectable mystery, I believe its awkwardness might be off-putting to many viewers. I think those who appreciate Headless Horseman stories and mysteries will likely find something to like here.
