Shrek’s desire is simply to be undisturbed; he possesses a certain resemblance to Greta Garbo. Unfortunately, the unpleasant Lord Farquaad, seemingly affected by Napoleon syndrome, forces fairytale beings from their homes, and they end up at Shrek's place. How can he get rid of them? Accompanied by a new companion—a rather irritating donkey—he journeys toward the castle where they receive an assignment: to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded tower and deliver her for marriage with the short ruler. Their adventure unfolds through various amusing situations, showcasing all the forest’s inhabitants, including a distinctly French Robin Hood, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and practically everyone else from fable lore. Whether or not they succeed in their task is something viewers will need to discover; however, the humor throughout provides entertainment for mature audiences with a script that playfully critiques common notions of beauty, devotion, intimidation, and other topics. Murphy remains intensely irritating—though Mike Myers, John Lithgow, Vincent Cassel, and Cameron Diaz contribute depth to the lively screenplay and the vibrant animation, resulting in a film that has aged remarkably well.
