_Rocketman_ seems to be attempting an unusual balance, aiming for both a conventional musician biopic and something akin to a grand musical spectacle. Often, films that attempt such combinations fall short of either goal. _Rocketman_, however, manages to achieve both, though not simultaneously. It feels like experiencing two separate movies; the epic musical fantasy component is genuinely excellent, while the other film isn't quite as successful. I’m still inclined to suggest seeing it, because there was enough that I found enjoyable, particularly in the performances, which are all very good—especially Taron Egerton's work. However, I did feel let down, not due to having unrealistic expectations beforehand, but because whenever _Rocketman_ started to build toward a feeling of exhilaration, it would soon be pulled back to something else – reality, I suppose. A reality presented on film, and one that’s familiar from countless musician biopics. After all, this is Elton John; if any story could have abandoned the ordinary and fully embraced an extravagant fantasy, it was his. But _Rocketman_ only tentatively touches upon that flamboyant potential. _Final rating:★★★ - I liked it. I would suggest checking it out._
