Elton John’s career includes decades of music, countless albums sold, full concert halls, numerous awards, and plenty of media attention. The new film “Rocketman” offers viewers a glimpse into the person behind the icon thanks to Taron Egerton's remarkable, Academy Award-worthy performance. The movie begins with John arriving at rehab wearing one of his extravagant stage outfits. As he talks with the group, he recounts his childhood as a quiet child longing for some sign of approval or affection from his father. When it’s discovered that he has an aptitude for piano, his grandmother encourages him and even takes him to apply to the Royal Academy of Music. His mother (Bryce Dallas Howard) is somewhat supportive but seems more preoccupied with her social life due to a failing marriage. As the film progresses, we see Elton working in a backing band and eventually responding to an advertisement that connects him with a manager. Joining forces with Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell), Elton and Bernie collaborate on a series of songs which leads to a string of gigs in Los Angeles. The movie really picks up momentum at this point as we witness their music becoming hugely successful, leading to parties, drug use, and wealth. Elton meets Manager John Reid (Richard Madden), who becomes his partner both personally and professionally as Elton openly embraces his homosexuality, which he had previously kept hidden. As record sales and hits increase, so do the destructive behaviors that put Elton on a dangerous path threatening everything he’s achieved. The film is a triumph of music and storytelling, skillfully using musical sequences and performances to depict different phases of his life and rise to fame. The acting is exceptional, and Egerton was simply incredible; not only did he portray the complexity of the character but he also sang all the vocals for the hit songs, and they were perfect. During a press screening I attended, many people were singing along, tapping their feet, or nodding their heads to the music, which highlights just how enduring and popular his catalog has been over time. The film also brought on some unexpected emotion; several people had tears in their eyes, as at its heart it’s the story of a young, introverted boy desperately seeking acceptance and love. I sincerely hope that the film receives recognition during Awards season because it's a wonderful and memorable cinematic experience. 5 stars out of 5
