‘Rocketman’ has a lot going for it, which makes the fact that it doesn't wholeheartedly embrace its musical fantasy concept somewhat frustrating. It ultimately feels similar to Julie Taymor’s unusual 2007 Beatles musical ‘Across the Universe’ - an interesting method of portraying a musician's work that never quite manages to stand on its own or be truly authentic. Even so, it remains a poignant and sometimes powerful depiction of Elton John; although the screenplay lacks depth in terms of both emotion and story, preventing Taron Egerton from fully realizing his capabilities, he delivers an impressive performance as Elton John and performs these remarkable songs with great energy. Ultimately, despite its refreshing candor and some intriguing decisions, ‘Rocketman’ falls short of being as bold as it strives to be and should have been; it's a film headed somewhere but never arriving at its destination.
