Arshia Borjali on Richard Jewell

6/10 · Dec 26, 2020

“Richard Jewell” stands out as a movie demonstrating how impactful storytelling transcends time. Even at ninety years old, Clint Eastwood remains a vital force in cinema, capable of producing worthwhile films. The film’s greatest asset is its well-developed characters; from the opening scenes, we gain a clear understanding of Richard, quickly establishing an emotional connection and rooting for his wellbeing throughout the story. This sense of innocence that Jewell possesses, and which transforms into hardship as the movie progresses, keeps viewers invested in his journey and prevents indifference to his fate. The cinematography contributes significantly to this character development and audience empathy, from the initial portrayal of Richard to the film's central events involving him and his mother, culminating in a satisfying resolution. The depiction of Jewell’s mother is also handled effectively, avoiding caricature and remaining believable. While the lawyer’s motivations for taking on the case feel somewhat flimsy initially, they become more understandable as the story unfolds, though this shortcoming doesn't diminish the film’s emotional impact. The script itself is crucial to the movie’s success, driving the character development and ensuring Richard's belief in law enforcement feels genuine, preventing his final statements from appearing hollow or rehearsed. Performances by Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, and Kathy Bates are noteworthy; Kitty’s portrayal also resonates, although her abrupt emotional shift near the film's conclusion strains credibility. Eastwood successfully conveys a distrust of the media, portraying it as potentially more harmful than injustice within the legal system. One minor weakness lies in the somewhat unclear depiction of the federal police investigation—the methods and evidence used to advance the case are not fully explained. However, the movie’s overall quality is strong enough that these shortcomings don't significantly detract from the experience. The concluding interrogation scene is particularly well-executed, revealing Jewell’s genuine thoughts and ideals through simple, sincere language, avoiding cliché thanks to the character work and script. The camera work and set design in this sequence are also commendable. Ultimately, “Richard Jewell” proves to be an enjoyable and fulfilling film.
