I honestly don’t recall seeing “Silent Hill” when it initially came out back in 2006, and now I'm positive I won't be revisiting it. While director Christopher Gans did at least make a sensible choice casting someone who isn’t unpleasant to look at as the main character, even Jeremy Irvine’s pale appearance couldn’t inject any vitality into this film. He portrays “James,” who encounters “Mary” (Hannah Emily Anderson) after an accident involving his car and her belongings. What follows is a series of events – flirting, courtship, moving in together, separation – but these are presented without any logical sequence, only revealed to us through flashbacks. It's when he tries to find her again that he learns the town has been devastated by what seems like a meteor impact, now inhabited solely by strange humanoid beings who clearly intend him harm. Will he be able to make sense of this emotionally tangled situation? Does it even matter? If this had simply been a monster movie featuring Irvine fighting for his survival, perhaps it might have fared better. However, that's not what we get. The chronology is all jumbled; characters appear and vanish seemingly without reason, and the story’s intended psychological depth is so damaged that it feels little more than a video game adaptation clumsily transferred to film. Some of the visual effects show flashes of ingenuity, but there’s a complete absence of character development or meaningful content. It might fill an hour on television in October, perhaps, but otherwise, there's not much here to recommend.
