Red Planet seemed like it could have been an exciting science fiction story about surviving against the odds, but ultimately it doesn’t quite work because of problems with the script and how it was brought to life. The narrative centers on astronauts traveling to Mars for an important assignment; however, the movie has difficulty building suspense or making you feel concerned about what happens to them. While the direction is adequate, it lacks imagination and never truly emphasizes the survival aspects or makes the action sequences feel pressing. The photography does a reasonably good job of showing how empty Mars looks, even though the special effects, while not as bad as some films, still seem disappointing considering when it was made. There were chances to create a more captivating or visually impressive setting that weren’t taken. The performances are generally okay, with a few actors doing better jobs than others, but the writing doesn't help them much. The lines they speak feel forced, and characters often interact in ways that seem awkward or hurried. The story also has some moments that don't quite make sense, which can be distracting. The artificial intelligence component, an important part of what’s happening, is presented in a way that feels uneven. The music doesn’t enhance the experience much, and scenes meant to be dramatic often feel empty, partly because of the uninspired musical selections. It started with a good idea, but Red Planet didn't manage to deliver on it enough for me to want to watch it again.
