It’s essentially a massive waste of money, but it does have some value. Being the second Mars-set film to flop spectacularly in 2000, Red Planet might – possibly – be deserving of another look from those who weren't thrilled with it initially. If you go into this understanding that it isn’t an action movie about aliens, and instead recognize it as a survival story reminiscent of 1950s science fiction films, one that focuses on its characters, then there’s a reasonably enjoyable time to be had while eating popcorn. That's not to suggest it's a brilliant addition to the science-fiction genre because it isn't; the existing issues remain. Terence Stamp is significantly underutilized (they really could have cast any inexpensive extra for his part), some plot points are unclear or unresolved, and it still feels slow during the section where the men talk on Mars while Carrie Anne-Moss worries and experiences an awkward physical reaction at the base station. However, there’s entertainment to be found here; odd science blends with appealing visuals and impressive set design, and the filmmakers seem certain about the kind of film they're creating. While Mission to Mars failed because it was trying too hard to be overly sentimental and significant, Red Planet is more playful and inviting. So join in and appreciate it for what it is: a place free from pretense with solid human drama at its heart. 6.5/10
