It's hard to see how someone who isn’t into the '80s would enjoy this. It feels like everything in _Ready Player One_ is based on some kind of reference, and almost every one of those references comes from the 1980s. I love ‘80s callbacks—seriously, I'm a huge fan—and even for me, it was just okay. I dread to think how someone who values originality would feel about this movie. To be fair, it turned out better than I thought it would. The advertising really killed my enthusiasm; I had zero expectations going in. But after watching, I found myself liking several aspects of the film. Still, _Ready Player One_ is pretty unsubtle and pushes how much you're willing to accept as believable. It’s not so much the unbelievable virtual world filled with pop culture creations that strains credulity, but rather the interactions between characters in their “real” lives. _Final rating:★★½ - There were a lot of things I liked about it, but ultimately it didn't quite come together._
