Jeremy Sisto portrays a census bureau employee from Chicago who’s sent to an isolated town in North Dakota, where the population remains fixed at 436. The question becomes whether he will manage to leave. “Population 436” (2006) unfolds as a gradually developing mystery and horror film, reminiscent of “The Wicker Man” (1973/2006) and “Apostle” (2018). Those who enjoy those films will find this to be a familiar experience, yet it possesses enough originality to merit attention. The filmmakers demonstrate assurance in allowing the story to progress at its own pace, maintaining a sense of believability, within reason. Charlotte Sullivan delivers an impressive performance as a young woman residing in the town, and Fred Durst, known as the lead singer for Limp Bizkit, portrays a friendly deputy.
