I had low hopes going into this, but I was pleasantly surprised; it wasn’t terrible. It’s quite a difference from the Bigelow version, which I rated a 9/10. What works in its favor is an interesting modernization of W. Peter Iliff's original script, including more extreme sports and elements reflecting contemporary culture, along with excellent cinematography and strong supporting performances by Delroy Lindo and Ray Winstone—they’re both really good character actors. However, the music selections are pretty bad, the screenplay is unbelievable and poorly developed, the cast doesn't measure up to Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey, and Lori Petty, and the direction isn't on par with Kathryn Bigelow's. It’s worth checking out if you’re just curious, particularly if you enjoyed the original film or are into extreme sports. Otherwise, it might not be for you.
