It absolutely earned a remake, however, the heavy dependence on computer-generated imagery ultimately detracted from it. The film seems to exist solely for the sake of action sequences; narratively, it's quite underwhelming. I’ve watched the original and found its action impressive, especially considering it was made in the 90s, with a truly compelling story. In this updated version, the plot is difficult to discern, the characters feel shallow, and the film barrels toward its conclusion with nonstop, high-energy action. This approach isn't always successful, as seen with films like '300' and 'Fury Road,' but it does lend itself well to a digital 3D experience. The plot felt familiar, though with minor changes, particularly concerning that eight-part challenge and the stunts themselves. The visual effects were occasionally subpar, lacking a sense of realism. I believe the reliance on CGI is the core problem; the film seems to depend on it completely. The actors did an adequate job, but casting a more prominent star might have yielded a different outcome. While entertaining, that simply isn’t enough these days—particularly for a police action movie where audiences anticipate depth and detail beyond just physical feats. In my opinion, it's suitable for a single viewing, or even better, to revisit the original. 6/10
