Synopsis

During the Vietnam War, a West Point graduate, Lieutenant Jeff Knight, takes command of a veteran platoon led by Sergeant Michael McNamara in a Vietnamese trench camp. The experienced soldiers are disillusioned with the war and skeptical of their new, idealistic officer. Unlike his predecessor, Jeff actively leads his men into danger, quickly learning that real combat differs from training. He is wounded and temporarily removed from duty. Upon returning, he earns the respect of his men and superiors through his courage. The platoon faces challenges beyond the Vietcong, navigating complicated relationships with local villagers they are meant to protect. Some villagers openly aid the enemy, others secretly work with them, and all live under the threat of harsh consequences that complicate the soldiers' mission. This complex network of alliances and fears forces Jeff and his platoon to confront the difficult moral questions of war and their roles as protectors in a foreign land.
