This is a reimagining of an older, frankly terrible, film. I picked it up because it’s been receiving surprisingly positive feedback from both professional reviewers and audiences. I honestly can't figure out why. There are countless superior films in the action, horror, and fantasy categories that critics routinely tear apart. It completely escapes me how this movie managed to get such high marks. The female characters seem to exist solely to display their breasts before being devoured. The male actors portray unpleasant individuals who endure humiliating experiences followed by complete consumption. A particularly bizarre sequence involves the central antagonist losing a body part, which piranhas then retrieve and regurgitate underwater. I’m certain the 3D visuals only amplified how absurd this moment was. I generally have a high threshold for substandard performances and weak writing in films that rely heavily on effects and gore, but throughout most of this movie, I just kept thinking, “what the heck is going on here?” The majority of the film felt like a series of disconnected scenes intended to showcase 3D effects involving breasts and various methods of human consumption. This is exactly why 3D has been detrimental to cinema.
