If you’re considering seeing Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson’s newest and unusual character study, it might be worth putting a little extra thought into what you wear. After being completely absorbed in the world of 1950s high fashion for over two hours, I felt out of place leaving the theater in my everyday clothes. Phantom Thread is about as immersive an experience as film can offer. From the very beginning, which introduces us to the House of Woodcock, a London design firm run with quiet authority by celebrated dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day Lewis), Anderson’s movie pushes aside any awareness we might have of the present day. As we watch Reynolds go through his daily routine, it's clear that we are watching a film about someone obsessed with perfection—a film made by someone who values precision—and starring an actor believed to be retiring from acting. Reynolds is set in his ways, and he knows what he enjoys; he likes familiarity. Consequently, his connections with numerous admirers (during a time when men who created things were considered desirable, especially if those creations made women feel beautiful, like Reynolds' gowns) rarely last past breakfast, where even casual conversation and toast buttering irritate him to a ridiculous extent. It’s during one of these breakfasts, away from home in a small country cafe, that Reynolds meets Alma (Vicky Krieps), an attractive waitress from Eastern Europe who is charmed by his flirtations and accepts his invitation for dinner. Their relationship develops quickly, and Reynolds invites her into his life, instructing her in the practices of his profession. It doesn't take long before Alma’s habits begin to bother the fiercely independent and somewhat self-centered Reynolds, and her presence starts to interfere with his work—she’s become an unwelcome influence! Reynolds expects that she will follow the pattern of other women in his past and leave quietly once confronted with his childish behavior. However, he is mistaken; Alma is determined to make things work between them, even if it requires drastic actions.
