It feels like a standard artist biography blended with a collection of greatest hits, and its routine approach is particularly frustrating when you consider how other filmmakers have started to challenge and evolve the biographical documentary format. Perhaps if Ron Howard hadn’t been so admiring of Pavarotti and instead showed more interest in posing real questions about him and his background, it might have become an absorbing and illuminating film. Instead, it doesn't present anything fresh and fails to make a lasting mark, which is quite different from the performer himself.
