Hearing that Adam McCay is teaming up with Bong Joon Ho to reimagine Parasite as a Netflix series has me incredibly excited. It’s comfortably the strongest film I've encountered since The Big Short. Bong's remarkable ability to deliver alongside the plot’s undeniable appeal immediately grabbed my attention. I could have happily watched that family assembling pizza boxes for a couple of hours. The narrative, much like the family within it, develops its own momentum, quickly rising to a situation that feels unsustainable. This scheme reminiscent of Bunuel’s work—a plan to infiltrate the lives of the wealthy—escalates with obvious delight and carefree abandon, only to inevitably crash down. Ultimately, these unfortunate characters end up quite literally submerged in their own mess. Simultaneously, the privileged upper class holds a pleasant garden party that transforms into a devastating Shakespearean bloodbath. It’s all enjoyable until someone loses a child. (A word of advice for those with money: Verify the backgrounds of new employees and reconsider inviting people from less fortunate circumstances to your social gatherings). Reflecting years of societal shifts, Parasite portrays the crumbling of the middle class and an expanding gap between different socioeconomic groups, making it essential viewing regardless of where you stand financially. You don’t need wealth or resentment toward the wealthy to appreciate this instant classic. But please, whatever happens, don't attempt this at home. Never mix people from different economic backgrounds without protective gear or within a secure and monitored environment.
