CinemaSerf on Oz the Great and Powerful

The final portion held potential for something genuinely enjoyable, but unfortunately, a significant amount of time must be endured before reaching it. "Diggs" – portrayed by James Franco – is an unremarkable and somewhat unlikeable magician performing in smaller venues when his hot air balloon encounters a storm, transporting him to a strange land. There, he quickly forms alliances with a winged ape, a porcelain doll, and sets out toward substantial wealth within the “Emerald City.” Presenting himself as a powerful wizard upon arrival, he finds himself facing three sisters who are considerably more skilled in magic – and soon becomes manipulated in their struggle for dominance over "Oz." Will he be able to stop their plans and protect the city from them? There's an underlying story concerning "Diggs"' journey toward moral character, but it progresses at a frustratingly slow pace. Franco’s performance is serviceable but nothing special, and the three witches – Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, and Michelle Williams, who reprises her role as “Glinda” from the earlier film – seem strangely detached in their acting. The reliance on greenscreen effects might be to blame. There's a general lack of energy throughout; the dialogue is uninspired, with only occasional amusing lines delivered by his beleaguered assistant "Frank" (Zach Braff) managing to spark any interest. Visually, it’s appealing, and the transition from black-and-white to color functions effectively, but overall I found myself feeling rather disappointed with most aspects of this production.
