Dark Jedi on Oz the Great and Powerful

6/10 · Mar 22, 2018

I’ve rarely encountered a film with such intensely saturated and bright colors. That is, setting aside the initial few minutes, which are presented in black and white as an apparent homage to the earlier Wizard of Oz. It's remarkable how effectively this works. The landscapes and settings are lovely to look at, embodying the fairy-tale aesthetic one anticipates from Oz. The narrative functions essentially as a prequel to the original Wizard of Oz story. This doesn’t significantly disrupt the viewing experience for most of the film, but it becomes quite noticeable in the final scenes. Generally speaking, the plot is adequate. It certainly entertained the children, and I believe that's primarily what this movie aims to achieve. For adult viewers, it’s acceptable, though not particularly remarkable. The main character can be frustrating at times with his questionable morals, as described in the promotional material. Unfortunately, he doesn’t quite manage to portray that charming rogue personality one might have hoped for; he simply remains a rather unremarkable figure possessing those same questionable morals. I feel this applies to most of the other central characters too, aside from their ethical stances, which are either unambiguously good or definitively bad. Overall, I'd say the movie was acceptable but didn’t surpass that level. For children, it was likely better than just okay. I did find enjoyment in the film, largely due to its distinctive and vibrant color palette and the beautiful scenery.
