It’s comparable to observing paint dry. Stanley Kramer and John Paxton created the screenplay from Nevil Shute's novel. The cast includes Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins, and Donna Anderson; Ernest Gold composed the music, and Giuseppe Rotunno was in charge of cinematography. Following a worldwide nuclear conflict, people living in Australia become aware that radioactive clouds are moving toward them. A group struggles to accept this reality. Though critics gave it positive reviews and those involved initially praised it as a significant and impactful film, *On the Beach* isn't likely to appeal to all audiences. The actors’ prominence is a plus, but much of the story feels worn out, predictable, and corny. Shute himself apparently wasn’t satisfied with Kramer’s adaptation of his book; the director clearly prioritized delivering a message-driven film. If Kramer aimed to convey what it's like to await death, he succeeded in that regard. However, Gold’s frequent use of "Waltzing Matilda" in the soundtrack also becomes monotonous. 4/10
