A motorcycle gang leader’s death just outside of Miami triggers a series of killings during Spring Break. John Saxon portrays the focused police chief, while Sarah Buxton and Nicolas De Toth play college students who become invested in stopping the violence. “Nightmare Beach,” released in 1989, shares production connections with “Primal Rage” from the previous year, including some personnel like the female lead and the writers. Even though it came relatively late in the decade, it’s among the more enjoyable slasher films of the 1980s. The movie has a lot going for it – an energetic soundtrack, a Spring Break atmosphere, many attractive young women, and a motorcycle gang reminiscent of “The Warriors.” There's a clever mystery element that recalls "Night, After Night, After Night" from two decades prior, as well as “The Centerfold Girls” from 1974; I won’t elaborate further. It’s certainly an unfairly little-known slasher film. Find it and watch it. Its running time is 1 hour, 30 minutes, and filming took place in Fort Lauderdale and North Miami Beach, Florida.
