Synopsis

In 1954, fifteen-year-old Snit Mandolin returns home after two years in a boys' home to his eccentric and isolated aunt Matilda. Rejected by the community and struggling to make a life on her farm, Snit connects with Johnny Swift, also fifteen, another outsider. Johnny produces and sells moonshine through a local dealer, and the boys form a close bond. Snit also finds first love with Robin, a spirited sixteen-year-old girl from the area. Their lives change when Roy Kane, the district's private investigator who previously removed Snit from his home, reappears. Kane intends to use the boys to track down the bootlegger. Pursued by Kane, double-crossed by the dealer, and haunted by his past, Snit and Johnny’s friendship fractures. Alone again in a community that has always shunned him, Snit faces a violent turning point.
