Louisa Moore - Screen Zealots on Heard She Got Married

5/10 · Apr 23, 2023

Those with an established familiarity with the work of Motern Media, a group with a dedicated online fanbase, are most likely to find something to enjoy in Charles Roxburgh’s “Heard She Got Married.” The people involved have built up a devoted following by creating movies entirely on their own and paying for them themselves. I don't believe its appeal extends much further than that small circle of enthusiasts—though Roxburgh’s earlier Fantastic Fest film, “Magic Spot,” is more widely accessible. Billed as a “suburban noir thriller” by co-writer and performer Matt Farley (I must acknowledge his cleverness in promoting the movie), the story centers on Mitch Owens (Farley), a former musician who returns home and encounters Van Hickman (Chris Peterson), his new neighbor, once a bass player now working as a mailman. Van mentions some homemade hot dogs and also brings up a set of strange nude photos that arrived as a welcome present. Feeling uneasy, Mitch becomes suspicious and resolves to uncover the truth behind these events. Going into more detail would risk giving away key plot points, but this film leans toward being unsettling rather than humorous. Like Farley’s other projects, it utilizes performers who aren't professional actors, resulting in a somewhat disjointed feel throughout. The story also moves at an extremely deliberate and slow pace. I realize that filmmaking is challenging, and I do recognize the effort involved, but simply putting time, energy, and money into a film doesn't automatically make it entertaining or well-made. My first impression of “Heard She Got Married” was that it would only appeal to those close to the cast and crew. It seems I was wrong. The filmmaker and his friends have cultivated this dedicated following for reasons that escape me. While I didn’t enjoy this film as much as “Magic Spot,” which is considerably better, that isn't a particularly high bar to clear.
