Synopsis

In 2005, workers in a Croatian machine tools factory occupied their workplace and began operating it collectively. This became the only successful worker occupation in post-socialist Europe. Now, as they explore new ways to manage their shared ownership, the factory's community faces increasing pressure from the global market, impacting wages and internal organization and creating growing discontent among the workers. Over five years, filmmaker Srđan Kovačević documents the story of this unique cooperative. "Factory to the Workers" reveals the workers who defied traditional economics with their actions. A decade later, the question remains: can a worker-run factory thrive outside of capitalism, or is something more fundamental required?
