This film explores a love story that blossoms despite political, cultural, and geographical barriers. It follows Simon, a Dutch communist student in Moscow, who falls in love and marries Russian woman Zoya in 1968. When Simon returns to the Netherlands, he anticipates Zoya's arrival, but her exit visa is repeatedly denied. Years pass, and a child is born to Zoya in Moscow. Director Aliona van der Horst portrays their family history, intertwined with international politics, in this moving account. The film uses Simon’s love letters to Zoya – filled with feelings of helplessness and the impact of political events on their happiness – as a guide. Archival footage, home movies, photographs, and contemporary interviews combine to tell their story.
