Synopsis

Between 2000 and 2007, Teat(r)o Oficina Uzyna Uzona staged a theatrical adaptation of Euclides da Cunha's lengthy book, *Os Sertões*, which recounts the 19th-century War of Canudos in the Brazilian backlands. The project resulted in a five-part play cycle: *A Terra* (2002), *O Homem I* (2003), *O Homem II* (2003), *A Luta I* (2005), and *A Luta II* (2006). The first play is a carnival opera where the performers embody the earth, plants, wind, animals, rivers, and drought. It explores the hidden connections between nature and humanity. Building on this initial work, the subsequent plays offer a renewed perspective on how humans impact the environment. The destructive power of this impact is linked to financial gain, and the play raises questions about land occupation, including contemporary real estate expansion affecting Teatro Oficina and the world at large, particularly in increasingly arid regions.
