CinemaSerf on Mr. Moto Takes a Vacation

Peter Lorre is performing admirably in this fairly pleasant story centered around ancient relics. His character, "Mr. Moto," becomes involved with a scheme devised by some resourceful criminals who intend to pilfer the recently unearthed crown of the Queen of Sheba before it can be secured at a San Francisco museum. The group attempting the theft is headed by the mysterious “Mr. Metaxa”—possibly of Greek descent—and Lorre’s task is to protect the valuable object and uncover the real identity of the leader behind the operation so he can get back to his vacation. A somewhat unusual British man, "Featherstone" (played by GP Huntley), serves as a counterpoint, and while that aspect isn't always successful, generally this is a briskly moving action-adventure with a touch of suspense and enough uncertainty to hold your attention. Lorre seemed perfectly suited for these kinds of movies; his almost childlike excitement and energy made for an engaging viewing experience, and I certainly suggest checking it out if you appreciate brief, well-made crime stories.
