Synopsis

This film recounts the Confederacy's final major invasion of the North in July 1864, focusing on their attack on Washington, D.C., which threatened to cripple the Union war effort. The campaign follows Confederate forces from Richmond to Petersburg, then to victories at Lynchburg and in the Shenandoah Valley under General Jubal Early, where he defeated two Union armies. They cross the Potomac River, capturing Frederick and Hagerstown, and reach the pivotal Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864, where Union General Lew Wallace mounted a desperate defense. Ultimately, the Confederates reach Washington, D.C., only to miss their opportunity to seize the Union capital by a matter of minutes.
