Synopsis

"A Happening in Central Park" was filmed on Saturday, June 17, 1967. Sponsored by Rheingold Beer and open to the public, the free concert took place in Central Park's Sheep Meadow. Barbra Streisand's television sponsor, Monsanto, videotaped the event for a future CBS broadcast. Streisand performed the concert during a weekend break from filming "Funny Girl." The night before, June 16th, she and her crew rehearsed late into the night. Numerous photos of Streisand wearing a headband were taken during the dress rehearsal. (One of the images on her "A Christmas Album" cover is from that Friday night rehearsal.) She tried on various gowns and worked with hairdresser Fred Glaser on different hairstyles. Director Robert Scheerer also finalized camera positions during the rehearsal, using seven color video cameras to record the concert.
