I'd encountered other Australian Westerns before—films like “Quigley Down Under” and “The Proposition”—but this one, "Inn of the Damned," was new to me; its name suggests something more akin to a horror film from Hammer Studios. The movie weaves together the familiar plot of a bounty hunter pursuing an outlaw with aspects reminiscent of “Terror at Red Wolf Inn,” along with touches inspired by “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” and Charlton Heston’s lesser-known “The Call of the Wild," particularly in scenes featuring women in a hot tub. Initially, I was put off by the characters' strong accents, making it hard to understand their dialogue, but I gradually became engaged with the central narrative concerning an American bounty hunter and his companion, portrayed by Alex Cord and Tony Bonner. There’s a memorable scene showcasing Ebor Falls’ beauty. The film takes a different direction in its latter half, which I found engaging, bolstered by solid performances; Judith Anderson is particularly effective as the unsettling Mrs. Straulle. Its runtime is 1 hour and 58 minutes, and it was filmed from November 1973 to January 1974 in the Mangrove Mountain area of southeast Australia—a little over an hour north of Sydney—as well as at Ebor Falls, which lies approximately five hours’ drive further north.
