Synopsis

The UK government considers a global outbreak of a deadly flu virus a serious threat. To better prepare for future pandemics, more accurate data is crucial. Dr. Hannah Fry launches a pioneering experiment, asking the public to download the BBC Pandemic app to simulate a pandemic and help plan a response. The experiment aims to predict how quickly the virus spreads, how many lives it could claim, and what measures can be taken. Dr. Fry takes on the role of Patient Zero, initiating the simulated outbreak in public. Simultaneously, an emergency physician investigates why influenza remains a significant danger, even a century after devastating past outbreaks. He connects with researchers studying contagious individuals and visits a vaccine manufacturing facility. Combining his findings with the results from the BBC Pandemic experiment, he and others arrive at a startling discovery.
