Synopsis

Nearsightedness is rapidly becoming a global health crisis. Scientists are investigating a possible cause behind the dramatic increase, particularly in East Asia, where nearly 90% of teenagers and young adults are now affected. The condition is also spreading in the USA and Europe, impacting roughly half of young adults. Projections suggest that by 2050, nearly half a billion people worldwide could face blindness. Severe nearsightedness can lead to serious eye problems like retinal detachment, cataracts, glaucoma, and ultimately, blindness. In East Asia alone, one-fifth of university students have this severe form of myopia, with half at risk of permanent vision loss. This growing threat has spurred research into the disorder's causes, and scientists are starting to uncover answers.
