Synopsis

During World War II, Japan occupied Taiwan. Hai Sheng, a young Taiwanese man influenced by Japanese militarism, joined the Japanese forces with his foster-brother, Yamamoto Ichiro, to fight in mainland China. Witnessing the Japanese army's brutality against Chinese civilians, Hai Sheng desperately wanted to return home. On his journey, he encounters four girls, including Ning Yu, and agrees to escort them to occupied Nanjing. He must protect them while evading Yamamoto Ichiro, the captain of their unit. Ultimately, only Sakurako (Ying Zi), who is of Japanese descent, survives. After seeing the atrocities committed by the Japanese, Ying Zi inspires Hai Sheng to work to help her escape from the Japanese army camp.
