Synopsis

In 2004, during the night Ruslana wins Eurovision for Ukraine, two teenage outsiders in a rural Australian town find themselves at odds with their families. Seventeen-year-old Todd is questioned by his family about his sexuality and whether he'll take a girl to the school dance. Meanwhile, Lesia Lysenko, the only girl from an immigrant family at Todd’s Catholic high school, argues with her father, who wants her to bring her younger brother as a chaperone to the same dance. As Lesia begins to rebel, Todd is asked to the dance by a girl who dislikes pop music. He practices the dance moves from Ruslana's song in his family’s shed and plans to get it played at the school disco. The film culminates in a heartwarming conclusion as Lesia and Todd discover that embracing individuality means dancing to their own rhythm.
