Wuchak on Colossal Youth

This low-budget film about high school life feels authentic. A student nearing graduation in San Antonio finds himself balancing his responsibilities at home, his studies, two male companions, a close female friend, and the girl he’s interested in. “Colossal Youth” (2018) is an independent drama/romance that recalls “Love Everlasting” (2016), though with a lighter tone than “The Breakfast Club.” Because it draws from the writer/director's personal experiences, the film feels very genuine and portrays both the positive and negative aspects of being in high school. Viewers who enjoy films like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” "Footloose” and "Clueless" will likely find something to appreciate here, provided they are willing to accept its limited $250,000 budget. It doesn’t reach the quality of those movies, certainly, but I would prefer watching this over “The Breakfast Club,” which I think is too hyped up. Troy Osterberg, the main character, bears a resemblance to a younger Tom Cruise. Reece Everett Ryan provides some laughs as his friend with dubious morals. Alexa Dowd makes an impression as Siobhan and Kimmy Caruso also does well in her role as Erica. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 38 minutes, and was filmed in San Antonio. GRADE: B-
