Synopsis

A team of hikers undertakes a challenging ascent of Mount Everest, starting at Base Camp and progressing through the dangerous Death Zone to the summit. This extreme climb is known to be profoundly transformative for those who survive. However, the film explores whether the physical strain of high-altitude climbing – including extreme cold, wind, sun, and lack of oxygen – can cause lasting damage to the human body and brain. Following the tragic events of 1996, scientists monitor the team to study the effects of high altitude on the heart, lungs, blood, and brain. The film also examines the psychological factors that lead climbers to make risky decisions near the peak, and the added dangers encountered during the descent when a climber's respiratory illness worsens in the remote mountains.
