Synopsis

This film looks back at Hermann Nitsch, an Austrian artist known for his "Actionist" performances, painting, music, and stage design. He remains a controversial figure in the art world, despite his significant reputation. Nitsch was a key participant in Viennese Actionism alongside artists like Günter Brus, Otto Mühl, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. Starting in the early 1960s with performances in Vienna that led to legal trouble and imprisonment, he developed his signature work, the "Orgy Mystery Theatre." Inspired by Greek mythology, Antonin Artaud, and Sigmund Freud, this has expanded and evolved over decades, incorporating various art forms. The documentary features a four-hour look at his performances from 1962 to 2003, alongside a 2005 interview.
