Synopsis

At the start of the Meiji era, the Gokumonjou, a prison on a large lake, is created to address rising crime. The Kumou brothers – Tenka, the eccentric head; Soramaru, the reckless but honorable second son; and Chuutarou, the innocent youngest – ferry prisoners there. They live peaceful lives in Oumi with their housekeeper, Shirasu Kinjou, despite their difficult job. However, Oumi holds a legend: the Orochi, a monstrous serpent that awakens every 300 years in a human host. Unbeknownst to Soramaru and Chuutarou, their family's true duty is to seal the Orochi before it fully revives and destroys the world. During the monster’s next awakening, the Kumou family must find the strength to keep laughing amidst the clouds.
